At least 1 injury after incidents at Maryland gov't buildings

At least one person was injured on early Thursday afternoon after two incidents involving possible devices at two government buildings in Maryland, officials said.

One incident happened at the Maryland Department of Transportation Headquarters in Hanover while a second incident happened at the Jeffrey Building in downtown Annapolis. Reports indicate it may have involved explosive devices.

Phill McGowan, a spokesman for Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen, said city fire crews responded to the mailroom of the Jeffrey Building in the noon hour after a 'packaged device' injured a male employee. He could not say how the employee was injured, or if the package exploded.

McGowan said the City's bomb squad along with the FBI were on scene. "The Mayor has notified city employees not to open packages until further notice," he said, adding that bomb-sniffing dogs would inspect any packages.

McGowan added that Annapolis Chief of Police Michael Pristoop had also taken precautionary security measures to protect City Hall, although few details about the nature of the packages were available.

Last month, a series of packages exploded at embassies in the Italian capital of Rome. Several people were injured, but the attacks were reportedly carried out by an Italian anarchist group, the Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI).
